In terms of the agreement, Xiocom Wireless will build an extended broadband wireless network encompassing the greater Miami area. On completion the Wi-Fi mesh network will provide the approximately 300 square-mile Greater Miami area with a wireless broadband alternative for residents and visitors to the area. Xiocom Wireless will also enable Internet access for a number of nonprofit partners of Miami, in addition to creating wireless hotspots at a number of Miami parks, community centers and libraries.
Access to this network, owned and operated by Xiocom Wireless, Inc., will be made available through Xiocom Wireless' local partners and service providers. These partners and service providers will offer wireless residential media services, business-grade network access and voice services to companies. Residents will immediately have access to broadband data with voice service (VoIP) slated for release in the near future.
"Many small businesses have recognized the potential of wireless technology and begun deploying hot spots in-and-around Miami in the last several years," says Jeff Spence, CEO of Xiocom Wireless, Inc. "Our Wi-Fi mesh networks deliver an affordable and portable broadband Internet connection at anytime, in any place; and for businesses we will offer a wireless T-1 solution that - when compared to existing landline offerings – is flexible and more cost effective than today's existing offerings.
The Xiocom Wireless networks provide customers with wireless broadband in the form of WiFi (802.11b and 802.11g) and can also deliver licensed spectrum wireless broadband as network usage requirements change. A single access point on this mesh network can provide customers with multiple classes of service and multiple speeds of data access.
